A Day in the Life
3:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
At 3:15, kindergarteners and first-graders play outside. Inside the gym, students in grades two through five do homework. Unless they have a question, students work independently. If they need help, a volunteer or teacher is available. Even those students without homework do something like read a book or practice math word problems.
4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
At 4:00, enrichment activities begin for everyone. The KIN program has access to the school district curriculum, so staff members have designed theme-based activities around units of study. This particular week the science curriculum is supplemented by after-school activities like worm farming, studying bees with a beekeeper, making compost, and observing live ladybugs.
4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
At 4:30, the older students go outside for recreation while the kindergarteners and first-graders play indoor learning games to reinforce skills. Card games incorporate addition and multiplication as well as matching sets and patterns. Riddles and stories help develop reasoning skills and interest in reading. At 5:30, the older students join the learning games.
6:00 p.m.
At 6:00, the day ends as parents arrive to visit and sign their children out.
