DESCRIPTION
Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) are affordable, research-based questionnaires developed through collaborative efforts of state specialists, content experts, and education researchers at the Council of Chief State School Officers, Learning Point Associates, and the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. SEC tools are currently available for K-12 teachers of English language arts (including reading), mathematics, and science.
Designed for use by education leaders and teachers at the school and district levels, the SEC provide a model for analyzing the content and method of teaching in relation to state standards. The SEC can help improve instruction within and across grade levels; track school performance; identify professional development needs; meet No Child Left Behind targets; and align curriculum instruction, and assessment with state standards.
The first step to using the SEC is to create an online project. Individual teachers then complete online surveys for each class on curriculum content, instruction, time spent teaching subject content, and time allocated to different instructional practices. Teachers also report on their preparation, professional development, and school conditions. Results are presented online through a series of user-friendly and functional charts, graphs, reports, and data files. A variety of additional resources (such as state assessments, and student-tested performance) are available to allow detailed school-to-school, grade-to-grade, and teacher-to-teacher comparisons.
