Flash FAQ

What is Flash?

Macromedia® Flash is a method of delivering interactive multimedia content over the Internet. Flash is popular on the Web because it enables the creation of visually dynamic and interactive online user experiences while keeping files very small for fast downloads.

What do I need to be able to view Flash on the Internet?

You need the Flash plug-in, which is available free. The Flash plug-in has been widely distributed and may already be installed on your computer. You can check to see if your computer can display Flash files with this small test movie.

Is Flash accessible?

Yes. The latest Macromedia Flash Player has integrated support for Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). As of the release of Macromedia's Flash Player 6, the first screen reader to work with Macromedia's accessibility features in Flash is Window-Eyes from GW Micro. (More information is available at www.gwmicro.com.)

JAWS® for Windows also supports the Flash plug-in. For more information on JAWS support for Flash, visit the Jaws Web site Features and Enhancement page.
