Step 1: Establish a Literacy Committee

Purpose:

To establish a literacy committee that will plan and initiate the monitoring process, gather data, facilitate collaboration and decision making, and communicate findings

Actions:

1. Define committee members' roles. The committee is responsible for planning and initiating the monitoring process, gathering data and resources, coordinating with teachers who are monitoring the literacy program in their individual classes, leading the decision-making process to chart a new direction for the literacy program, and communicating the findings to school personnel and community members.

Questions to consider:

  • What are some other roles you would like to see represented on the committee?

2. Identify and contact potential members of the committee (e.g., teachers, administrators, parents, and other faculty).

Questions to consider:

  • What teachers, administrators, etc. might:
    • Be willing to serve on the committee?
    • Have time to serve on the committee?
    • Have content expertise required by the committee?
  • How will you contact potential members?
    • Memo to staff ?
    • Agenda item for a department meeting or a schoolwide staff meeting?
    • Letter to the Parent Teachers' Association?
  • How will members be placed on the committee?
    • Will they be appointed by the principal?
    • Will the school hold an election?
    • Will this position be on a volunteer basis?
  • How long will they serve on the committee?
  • Will their roles ever change?

3. Select an appropriate number of people to participate on the committee.

4. Convene a meeting of the committee in which you present the proposed monitoring plan, determine what responsibilities each member will have, and clarify the next steps.

Outcome:

After completing this step, you will have a literacy committee with members who have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and commitments.
