Step 6: Organize and Analyze Information

Purpose:

To organize and analyze information that will help with short- and long-term decision making

Actions:

1. Organize the data collected during the monitoring process.

Questions to consider:

2. Analyze and discuss the information with staff. For help in doing this, follow the guidelines for data analysisprovided by NCREL's Monitoring the Literacy Program. Allow enough time for committee members and teachers to thoroughly study, discuss, and question the data.

Questions to consider:

  • How will you analyze the data: school level, grade level, or classroom level? Which levels of analysis will best answer your questions?
  • If by school level, will you use this information when considering student promotion?
  • If by grade level, will this information influence your choice of textbooks? assessment strategies? teaching styles?
  • Which data will help you determine short-term goals? Which data will help you determine long-term goals?
  • Will any of the information you have discarded be useful in the future?

3. Form concrete conclusions about student performance.

Questions to consider:

  • What are the possible causes or reasons for student performance?

Outcome:

After organizing and analyzing the information collected during the monitoring process, you should have answers to the questions posed earlier as well as new questions to be answered during ongoing monitoring.
