Step 7: Take Action

Purpose:

To develop an action plan that will be used to implement improvements in your literacy program

Actions:

  1. Determine appropriate actions to improve the school's literacy program. Focus the actions on curriculum and instruction. Consider adopting new instructional strategies to improve students' literacy performances. These actions should also be based on best teaching practices, research, and current literature on literacy.

    Questions to consider:
    • What are the most pressing issues raised during the data analysis in the previous step?
    • Which issues require immediate action? Which can be deferred for long-term planning?
    • What are the most appropriate actions for addressing each issue of concern? Can these actions be carried out by teachers in the classroom?
    • What additional information, materials, staff, professional development, etc. will be necessary to implement the action plan?

  2. Include in your action plan techniques for studying implementation of new curricula and methods of instruction.
  3. Devise assessments to monitor the success of the actions and track the effectiveness of the plan throughout the year.
  4. Implement the action plan with a set timeline, assignments for all staff, and a committment for follow through.
  5. Continue to monitor the school's literacy program.

Outcome:

You should have an action plan that includes short- and long-term goals, focuses on curriculum and instruction, and contains techniques for studying implementation or new curricula and methods of instruction.
