What K–3 Teachers Need to Know
About Assessing Children's Reading

December 2003

Scott G. Paris, Ph.D.
Professor of Psychology and Education
University of Michigan

Dr. Scott Paris's paper provides practical suggestions for classroom-based literacy assessments that can be used to plan and guide instruction. Dr. Paris discusses the five elements of early reading instruction in primary grades—the alphabetic principle, phonemic awareness, oral reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. He provides assessment strategies as well as instructional options, discusses the usefulness of literacy portfolios, and suggests methods for managing assessment data. An extensive reference list is also included.
