The Modern Red Schoolhouse is a K-12 design that emphasizes high academic standards and a core curriculum, but allows students to reach goals in a way and at a speed that suits their needs. At the nine schools implementing the design, students devote varying time to each subject depending on their abilities.
The curriculum is based in part on E.D. Hirsch's Core Curriculum. It emphasizes core academic subjects; requires studies in foreign language, the arts, fitness, and health; and gives students a broad appreciation of the nation's various cultures and their roots. To monitor student progress, the student, parents, and teacher negotiate an agreement called the Individual Education Compact. This compact establishes measurable goals and details school, parent, and teacher responsibilities for helping the student succeed.
The program is based at the Hudson Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana.
