Teacher Mobility

Teacher Turnover in the Midwest: Who Stays, Leaves, and Moves?

Home | Illinois | Indiana | Minnesota | Wisconsin | Data Tool

Welcome! This Web site displays findings from a research study (Theobald & Michael, 2002) that explored the number of teachers who left public school districts in four Midwest states (Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and Wisconsin) during their first five years of teaching. The study analyzed separately three types of novice teachers: (1) those who taught continuously in the same district all five years ("stayers"), (2) those who transferred to another school district or districts within a state but remained in the same state all five years ("movers"), and (3) those who left public school teaching in a state and did not return ("leavers"). The study also surveyed five-year veteran teachers to investigate the factors that contribute to retaining teachers in the profession.

This research is based on new longitudinal data that contains information on the career histories of 11,787 teachers who began their teaching careers in Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota during the 1994-95 school year, and in Wisconsin during the 1995-96 school year. The career of each teacher in the population is followed from the year of entry through the 1999-2000 school year. The findings are reported in terms of the characteristics of the teachers and their job assignments.

The findings for Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and Wisconsin are presented separately. You may view each state's findings by clicking on the appropriate link.

In addition to viewing each state's findings, you also have the opportunity to use an interactive data tool to generate customized graphs. This interactive data tool is designed to allow you to specify made-to-order comparisons of teacher mobility across and within states.
