Charlotte Higuchi, third and fourth grade teacher at Farmdale Elementary School in East Los Angeles, California, talks about involving her students in parent conferences. Excepted from Schools That Work: The Research Advantage, Program #4, Alternatives for Measuring Assessment (NCREL, 1991).

"When I sit down and have the parent conferences with my students' parents, I always have the student there because it's about them, and the mom and the dad hopefully because they're a family, a unit together. I show them those assessments, and what they get from it, I believe, is a real sense of where their children are, what they know how to do in reading and math, etc. The standardized tests don't do that."
