School-Business Partnership: The Science and Mathematics Network of Central Ohio

Pathways Home

The Science and Mathematics Network of Central Ohio links people in business with educators in elementary classrooms. It has already brought together more than 7,000 educators and 110 business people in 72 Ohio school districts. These partnerships go well beyond the traditional "adopt-a-school" approach that many businesses take in assisting educational improvement. The Network philosophy to "work with" rather than "work on." Business partners and teachers work together to develop classroom-based goals and then collaborate to achieve those goals through hands- on activities that get children involved and excited about mathematics and science. The partnership has been described by participants as mutually beneficial. The collaborative is not only improving the teaching and learning process for children in schools, but the benefits of the partnerships are being demonstrated in the satisfaction, attitudes, and skill of participating business people. What business people are doing in the classroom with teachers and students helps them do their work better - running meetings a little differently or interacting with their peers more effectively. The rewards of the school- business partnerships are for everybody. The Central Ohio Network welcomes inquiries.
