Textbooks

When considering curriculum, Kuhs and Freeman (1979) advise:
"It is imperative that educators consider textbooks, since they are
currently the primary determinant of the mathematics curriculum that is
actually being taught throughout in this country. National, State and Local
curriculum guides present outlines that can be filled in by the use of
textbooks and other supplementary resource material and units. The textbook
does influence what is learned, and different patterns of achievement have been
associated with the use of different text books. Careful selection of
curriculum materials to meet school improvement goals is essential."
Research also indicates, however, that the effect of the teacher on children's
achievement is great. One review noted:
"It is the teacher, not the textbook, who can best control student
motivation and self-concept, who can cultivate the development of logical
reasoning through the interaction of students with peers, and who can
capitalize on everyday situations and questions to nurture the growth of
problem-solving skills." (Driscoll l98l)
