Concepts of Print

Concepts of print refers to all the concepts related to how print is organized and used in reading and writing tasks. Several concepts must be attended to by young learners: letter vs. word, first and last, directionality, and word-by-word matching. Children understand the concept of letter vs. word when they recognize a difference between letters and words and realize that words are composed of letters. Children also must develop an understanding of "first and last" as it relates to words, sentences, and whole texts.
