The Young Children's Literacy Project
The Young Children's Literacy Project aims to research, develop, and assess literacy-based technology tools to improve learning for elementary students from low-income homes. It is located at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
At-risk kindergartners, typically not motivated to participate in verbal tasks and comprehension discussions, show enthusiasm and productive response when they participate in literacy activities developed by the project. The project's design uses Multimedia environments that Organize and Support Text (MOST) to develop literacy skills that relate to story comprehension. Children view a story in video, online, and storybook form with the intent of creating their own books to print out and take home.
Using the media to elicit verbal responses, the teacher prompts them to orally develop a story line. Children hear their recorded voices, add information, and develop both the graphics and text for their books. The teacher types the final text, and the lesson concludes with the presentation of self-published (printed) books authored by the children.
