Tracy van Peeren, a kindergarten teacher at Greenwood Elementary School in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, describes the use of developmentally appropriate literacy activities in the kindergarten classroom.

van Peeren:
Current developmentally appropriate literacy activities include using pattern or predictable books that the children can read first and then use as models to create their own. You could use play based instructions. The kids are learning about literacy through play activities, having interactive story writing, making sure that you allow for the use of inventive spelling so children aren't becoming frustrated and caught up on the spelling part of it instead of the thought process, using graphic visuals like story maps and KWL charts and graphic organizers are all good ways to foster children's literacy skills.
