Henry GradillasHenry Gradillas, principal of Garfield High School in Los Angeles, California, discusses the role of parents in creating support systems necessary for young people to achieve. Excerpted from a principals' panel presentation at NCREL's Academy for Urban School Leaders in July 1992.
"What they mean by the support system, the support system mean nothing more than when the kid you know is going to begin to fail or you know he's going to have difficulty, you kick in two main areas of support, one is that outside of the school, you got to get the parents on your side, I don't care if you use the telephone or bring 'em in, you deal with parents, you involve 'em, you have 'em help you, help you with the homework or whatnot."
