The mission of the National Research Center on Student Learning (NRCSL) is to study the nature of effective learning and instruction in elementary and secondary school subjects and to identify forms and qualities of instruction, texts, and assessments and learning environments that can enhance reasoning and understanding. Core NRCSL projects examine reasoning, explanation, and problem solving in mathematics, sciences, and social sciences, looking primarily at forms of thinking that characterize high levels of competence in these subjects.
