Mike Macklin, a teacher at Maquoketa Community Middle School in Maquoketa, Iowa worked with his 8th grade Talented and Gifted class to develop a unique community awareness project. The project was based on a Sense of Place curriculum framework developed by a group of Iowa teachers and NCREL. The following materials were developed by the students as the first stop of their project. Included are their mission statement, letter to community leaders and interview questions. The interviews with 30 community leaders (Police Chief, Mayor, Bank President, members of the City Council and Chamber of Commerce, etc.) were to determine what role the students could play in planning for the future of their community. The students plan to continue working with the project for the next 2 years.
