The Role of Principals in School Improvement Efforts

The principal's role in change and improvement efforts has evolved to become that of a "leader of leaders" (Hallinger & Hausman, 1993). "Images of transformational leadership emphasize the capacity of the principal to engage others as leaders rather than the ability of the principal to direct the efforts of parents and staff" (Hallinger & Hausman, 1993).

The Role of Central Office Staff in School Improvement Efforts

Central office administrators also need to serve as "leaders of leaders" by helping schools build a collective vision, use resources effectively and efficiently, collaborate with other schools and agencies, and integrate initiatives. They should provide timely and efficient services in areas such as professional development, personnel, budgeting, purchasing, technology applications, transportation, etc.
