Critical Issue: Finding Time for Professional Development

Professional Development at Holt High School

Pathways Home

The narrator talks about how the schedule at Holt High School in Holt, Michigan, has been changed to allow teachers to engage in weekly professional development and teaming activities. Excerpted from the videotape Collaborations in Education: Creating a Professional Development School (North Central Regional Educational Laboratory, 1993).

"There has been some significant structural changes at Holt as a result of the program. These changes have empowered teachers and have allowed for interdisciplinary collaboration among teachers and for time to engage in research and continuing professional development. At Holt, this included setting aside Wednesday mornings to allow teachers the time to engage in these activities. To help compensate for this change in schedules, students started school thirty minutes earlier during the week and gained opportunities to participate in community activities and services."
