Teacher Beliefs and Ideology
Teachers need to develop an expanded view of themselves as educators working on a collaborative basis with members of other social service professions. Lindle (1996) notes: "Teachers, as members of a profession with a caring service ethic, are charged with the welfare of their students. Thus teachers are important members of school-linked services" (p. 165). Bucci and Reitzammer (1992) note that this view can be instilled during teacher education programs:
"Preservice teachers preparing to work with students in at-risk situations may need to modify the attitudes about the teaching profession that they brought to the program, especially if they view the teacher's role as individual, academic, and isolated from the community. Teachers who work with students must recognize that they are part of a team effort focusing on the academic, health, and social development of the student and that they function as part of the community." (p. 292)
