Elements
of Successful Social Support Programs for Adolescents

Price, Cioci, Penner, and Trautlein (1990) describe the elements of
successful social support programs for adolescents:
- "Empathy. Programs are sensitive to adolescents' own goals,
values, and aspirations.
- Insight. Programs recognize the interrelatedness of adolescent
needs and problems.
- Opportunities for Growth and Mastery. Programs provide roles
and activities that:
- Encourage active participation.
- Provide opportunities to learn new skills.
- Provide clear expectations and a predictable environment.
- Responsiveness to Adolescent Development. Programs are designed
to:
- Be sensitive to the timing of potential risks and developmental changes.
- Provide continuity over time.
- Organizational Support. Programs are organized to:
- Forge relationships among potential supporters of adolescents.
- Provide flexibility and willingness to commit resources." (p.
