Comprehensive Services

Comprehensive services includes the entire spectrum of programs, strategies, and organizations in the school and the community that are designed to prevent or intervene with alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use, violence, and other at-risk behaviors.

School

At the school level, the following programs, strategies, and organizations are helpful in reducing at-risk behaviors:

• Prevention education

• Student assistance programs

• Student behavior policies

• Peer counseling and peer leaders

• Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) clubs

• School climate improvement

• Extracurricular activities and sports

• Social activities, such as a drug-free prom

• Community service projects

• Service learning

• In-service training for teachers and counselors on intervention techniques such as conflict resolution

Community

At the community level, the following programs, strategies, and organizations are helpful in reducing at-risk behavior:

• Neighborhood-based early intervention programs

• Social welfare services

• Anti-drug campaigns

• Media campaigns

• Control of pro-use messages in advertising

• Support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous

• Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)

• Public service announcements

• Training of those selling tobacco or serving alcohol

• Public policy initiatives

• Parenting classes

• Counseling

• Adults serving as mentors

• Continuing education for dropouts
