Among the reasons students turn to drugs are loneliness, alienation from home and school, peer pressure, curiosity, and a lack of information about the negative effects of drug abuse. These causes of drug abuse are best combatted by providing students with pro-social alternatives for coping. Schools can do much to direct students away from the negative consequences of drug abuse, especially when they work cooperatively with families and community agencies.
