For a school safety plan to be most effective, it must be based on comprehensive information about the current state of school safety, the major impediments to a safe school environment, and the identification of elements that can be employed most productively to create a safe school. A safety assessment program should be updated continually, with mechanisms for rapid response to identified problems. It is critical that all members of the school community contribute to the informational process, and be continually informed about the results of school safety assessments.
