Prevention education for prekindergarten through grade 12 includes curriculum and instruction specific to health and safety issues. It is comprehensive, developmentally oriented, age-appropriate, up-to-date, and accurate (National Commission on Drug Free Schools, 1990). Prevention education targets specific risk issues, such as ATOD use, suicide, and violence. It supports health promotion, and individual and family wellness. Disciplines such as health education, family and consumer education, and developmental guidance typically have primary responsibility for prevention content.
