Webbing

Pathways Home

Webbing is a teaching technique that helps students learn by making connections with academic disciplines as well as their personal lives. This technique is especially useful for prevention education because it builds ownership and understanding of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) issues.

When a particular topic or idea is discussed in class, the teacher helps students build a "web" of interrelated concepts and facts from academic disciplines such as science, history, or health. Then the students are asked to make connections to their own lives through discussion of personal experiences and opinions. In this manner, the "web" is extended from a topic to the students' lives.
