Steve Schwartz, curriculum director for District 348 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, describes the need for prevention efforts to address the different events that influence the lives of children. Excerpted from the video series Schools That Work: The Research Advantage, videoconference #6, Preparing Students for Drug-Free Lifestyles (North Central Regional Educational Laboratory, 1992).

"It's amazing when we talk about prevention people try to deal with one aspect of the child, and in reality, we have to take a look at the whole child and everything associated with the child. Our program is like we're putting together a puzzle. We know the pieces that we need, our curriculum are basic pieces, the prevention programs are additional pieces, when we get the whole puzzle done, we want the complete child by grade twelve, and we start with pre-K and kindergarten."
