Differences in the Ways Charter Schools Work with Parents

Pathways Home

Becker, Nakagawa, and Corwin (1995) compared charter elementary schools with other elementary schools and found differences in the ways that schools worked with parents. In 54 percent of the charter schools, all teachers sent information home to parents explaining school lessons, compared to 24 percent of the other schools. Forty-six percent of the charter schools had all teachers provide suggestions for activities parents can do at home with their children, compared to 16 percent of the other schools. Sixty-one percent of the charter schools had three-fourths or more of the teachers create homework assignments requiring parental involvement, compared to 37 percent of the other schools. Seventy-one percent of the charter schools had a parent contract committing parents to help at school or at home, compared to 8 percent of the other schools.
