Developing
an Involvement Program

According to the Illinois Parent and School Initiative (n.d.), development
of a parent involvement program should include the following factors:
- "What types of opportunities will be given for parent involvement:
parents as volunteers, parents as tutors, parents as advocates, PTA/PTO,
parents as audiences, parents as learners.
- How the program will be designed.
- How the program will be implemented.
- Who will be responsible for implementation of the program.
- Timelines for implementation.
- Methods to keep parents informed.
- Methods to ensure equal access to information for those who lack literacy
skills, who are non-English-speaking, or who have handicapping conditions.
- Methods to recognize diverse family structures so all who need to know
about each child are informed.
- Methods to educate faculty and staff about the need for effectively
involving families in the educational process.
- Methods to coordinate services for each child." (p. 371)
