Parent
and Family Education
Some parents and families wish to learn about various topics that can offer help in their parenting roles. They may request that the school offer workshops and training on various topics, such as information about and support for parenting; child development; learning styles; effective discipline; helping children deal with peer pressure; and guidance on issues of violence, racism, and substance abuse.
Parents and families also may wish to learn how to help their children learn at home but find the prospect of helping their children with homework to be a daunting task. Because of curriculum changes, technology, and new information in content areas since parents were in school, parents may need guidance in helping their children learn.
Besides parenting-related topics, parents and families may wish to improve their own skills. Literacy training, computer training, and English as a second language (ESL) classes may be extremely beneficial to them. The school also may provide information to help parents understand their roles as decision makers and volunteers in the school setting.
