Joe D'Amico and Ed Janus, hosts of NCREL's Rural Audio Journals, speak about how school-to-work efforts strive to help students see the connection between work and learning. Excerpted from NCREL's Rural Audio Journal, Vol. 2, No. 3, From School to Work - and Back Again: Youth Apprenticeships in Wisconsin (NCREL, 1994).

D'Amico:
"Since nearly all good paying jobs today almost require some post secondary education, technical school, community college, four year college, school to work efforts seek to infuse the realities of the workplace into the schools and the learning of the schools into the workplace, so that students will see and appreciate the fundamental connection between work and learning."

Janus:
"Helping students understand what opportunities, experiences, and requirements await them after high school it is felt will convince many to continue learning, because they'll become familiar with the kinds of skills and knowledge actually required on the job. By allowing them to understand the educational requirements of the jobs that await them, students can come to better see the relevance of what schools wish to teach them."
