Supervised Occupational Experiences

Paris and Mason (1995) provide more information about supervised occupational
experiences:
"Agricultural education is one example which combines academic training,
community participation in 'supervised occupational experiences' (SOE's) and
extracurricular activities in auxiliary programs such as 4-H and Future Farmers
of America (FFA). Agricultural education serves those students interested in
pursuing agricultural employment upon graduation. Student participants in these
programs have benefitted from applied and interdisciplinary curricula taught by
teachers who have received instruction in high tech practices in agriculture.
Students obtain work-related experience through community and local employers.
The extracurricular activities offered through 4-H and FFA provide work-based
socialization and exposure for students through a formalized array of contests,
demonstrations and volunteer work.
Other vocational student organizations at the high school level which provide
similar opportunities include:
- DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America)
- FHA/HERO (Future Homemakers of America/Home Economics Related
Occupations)
- FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America)
- HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America)
- VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America)" (p. 48)
