The Coalition of Essential Schools Re: Learning Project

Pathways Home

The Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) is the brainchild of Brown University's Ted Sizer. This original project joined forces with the Education Commission of the States and formed the Re: Learning Project based on CES principles. The Re: Learning Project works with schools within states, gaining the support of both the governor's office and the chief state school officer within each member state. The project is based on nine common principles, and students are assessed with mastery exhibitions, in which they demonstrate their proficiency before a committee of teachers, community members, parents, and others. Portfolios and other performance assessments also are used as assessment strategies in these schools.
