John Davis, an English teacher at Columbia Middle School, describes the frustration that can arise when educators try to report information through the political and media arenas. Excerpted from the audiotape series Policy Talks, audiotape #1, Through the Eyes of Professionals (NCREL, 1994).

"The thing that upsets me the most, and I'm a former newspaper writer and obviously a former incurrence politician, the thing that upsets me the most is those two arenas, the news media and the political arena, grabbing a hold of data that has been worked over three or four time and put into the simplest format possible so that they can understand it and regurgitate it when they give a speech or when they write a story."

This Critical Issue summary was researched and written by Edward D. Roeber, director of assessment, Council of Chief State School Officers.
