Computer Networking

Pathways Home

Computer networking refers to a system of electronic technologies (including computers, printers, software, and databases) that are connected by electronic circuitry for the purpose of sharing information and resources.

A local area network (LAN) is the connection between two or more computers at one site--within a room or an entire building.

A wide area network (WAN) is the connection between two or more computers at separate sites over distances. A WAN requires modems and telephone lines. It promotes the use of the Internet, World Wide Web, e-mail, and computer bulletin boards.
