As this example demonstrates, many more "generic" technology devices, such as a digital camera, can have assistive applications in the classroom. In this video clip, a limited-English-proficient (LEP) student is being recorded with a digital camera by the teacher as she reads a book to practice her reading skills. The student is able to see what her improvement is and discuss how she has achieved it (e.g., listening to books on tapes, videotaping). The digital camera is a tool that helps the student to self-evaluate her reading fluency, sound recognition (e.g., two vowels making an /i:/ sound), and vocabulary building and understanding skills during a reading conference with her teacher. By having the digital camera record her reading session, the student is able to both hear and see the progress she is making as she continues to build her reading and listening skills. |
