Software programs that combine a talking word processor with a hardware-based graphical interface permit students to write texts with the help of icons symbolizing concepts they can use in their written work.

This video clip shows an example of a student in a multiage elementary classroom using a talking word processor, with the assistance of a teacher's aide, to construct a story about the best holiday of the year. The video clip shows the student using an alternative keyboard, which assists him in the writing of complete sentence structures and the insertion of vocabulary words into these structures using word and picture keys.
