To make printed or electronic text accessible to students with special needs, scanning and reading software can be used. Such software converts print into speech. It can read textbooks and Web sites to the student, thus encouraging student independence.

In this example, the student is working on an assignment about Egypt and the construction of the Great Pyramids. The screen-reading software allows him to receive immediate feedback via spoken cues, and portions of the text are highlighted and read to the student by the computer.
