Aiken Elementary School, Aiken, South Carolina

Aiken Elementary is a rural school in South Carolina that has successfully integrated technology into the curriculum. The school serves a racially and economically diverse population, and more than one-third of the students receive free or reduced-price lunches.

The school has made a special commitment to technology. Currently there are 400 IBM computers for 873 students and a complete networked lab for the building. Software for each subject area, CD-ROMs, Internet connections, e-mail, electronic bulletin boards, and a satellite dish for distance learning are available to students. Each student spends 20 minutes per day working in the computer lab. Students score in the 97th percentile on standardized achievement tests.
