Detracking

Pathways Home

Detracking refers to the process of changing over from tracked classrooms to heterogeneous grouping. A recent report synthesizing research on the influence of various educational conditions, policies, and practices on academic learning supports an inclusive approach to education (Wang, Reynolds, & Wahlberg, 1994). The authors list 45 variables that enhance students' learning and make the following conclusion: "What every student needs is powerful, state-of-the-art education programs based on what is known to work in the service of children" (p. 163).
