Student Diversity

The increasing diversity of students has led
to a dubious system of categorizing and placing students into special classes
or programs. For example, Ysseldyke et al. (1983) reported that as many
as 80 percent of all children could be classified as learning disabled
by the procedures now in use in the nation's schools. Even if these procedures
were reliable, research has produced no evidence that students who fall
behind in their learning need different kinds of instruction; rather, research
suggests these students need more instruction, which they seldom
receive in these specialized programs (Wang, Reynolds, & Walberg,1994).
