Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound

Pathways Home

Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound is a K-12 school design rooted in the philosophy of the Outward Bound wilderness program. The initial 12 Expeditionary Learning schools engage students in real-world projects that encourage deep thinking, collaboration, and community service. Each project is multidisciplinary and centered around a broad theme; some projects take as long as a semester to complete. Teachers guide students to information, evidence, and experience outside the classroom. They work with the same students for at least two years. School schedules provide longer, flexible class periods and common teacher planning time. Each school works with the community to establish standards in seven areas based on state and local expectations. Student assessment methods include teacher observation, self-assessment, portfolios, and exhibitions.

The program is based out of the Outward Bound National headquarters in Garrison, New York.
