KIP, FLIP, & SAIL Early Reading InterventionsIntervention services addresses students K-6. Students qualify for reading intervention based on multiple criteria including ISAT test results, ITBS scores, results of assessments given by reading specialists, and teacher recommendation. The reading intervention program is designed to serve those students most at-risk for failure in reading. A brief description of each program follows:
KIP (Kindergarten Intervention Program)
Kindergarten students receive 15 minutes of daily, one-on-one intensive instruction
from a trained program assistant. Instruction includes letter recognition, letter
production, alphabet sound recognition, phonemic awareness, and reading. KIP
begins early in February and ends in early May.
FLIP (First grade Literacy Intervention Program)
First grade students receive 30 minutes of daily, one-on-one intensive instruction
from a trained program assistant. FLIP sessions include daily reading of new
and previously read books, work with word families, and writing. FLIP begins
early in October and ends in May. Students may exit the program at any time,
when they reach grade level expectations in reading.
SAIL (Second grade Acceleration in Literacy)
Second grade students receive 30 minutes of daily, small group (no more than
three students) intensive instruction from a trained program assistant. SAIL
sessions include daily reading of new and previously read books, work with word
study, and writing. SAIL begins early in October and ends in February. Students
may exit the program at any time, when they reach grade level expectations in
reading.
Soar To Success (Intervention for students in grades 3-6)
Indentified students in grade 3-6 receive daily small group instruction from
the building reading specialist. Soar To Success is based on the research of
intermediate intervention and reciprocal teaching. During each session students
use four strategies of predicting, summarizing, questioning, and clarifying.
Students read increasingly more difficult texts and eventually read grade level
text. Ongoing fluency and retelling assessments are also a part of the program.
