Tangible results of early intervention are evident in student demeanor and behavior according to Joan Forman, project co-coordinator of Naperville, Il District 203's early intervention program, "Project Leap."
A text transcript is available.
Forman:
The changes that you see in children,
and that is just so uplifting and so positive,
changes not only in their demeanor
and how they look and how they express themselves but...
...The smiles on their faces, we and, and just maybe their,
their stature, you know if, for a child that's feeling, uh,
like perhaps he's, he's not succeeding,
you know, they may be a little bit looking downward
and a little slumped over,
but as they start to feel the success
and the confidence is building,
you can actually see them kind of straightening up and,
and that's, that's exciting to see.
And hearing the comments that children make,
oh I, I can do this now, it's, uh, you know, I, I can read,
listen to me mom, let me read.
We even had a comment from one of our parents
who we surveyed, uh, that -
I'll read this. She said, "Thank you very, very much
for finding and opening my sons learning door.
He has gone from, I can't, to, don't tell me,
to, watch this Mom. Thanks for opening up his world."
And those are the kinds of comments that give us goose bumps.
