Project ApproachThe project approach is an instructional method in which children do in-depth investigations of a topic. They work to answer a question that enables them to learn more about the project. "The topic of a project is a real phenomenon that children can investigate directly rather than mainly through library research," notes Katz (1994). As part of the investigation, children do hands-on research. Typically, the children work together in small groups, but they also may work individually or as a whole class. The project approach was popularized by the early childhood program in Reggio Emilia, Italy.
